Consumer Law

Welcome to Consumer Law Twin Cities

Thank you for visiting this website.  Consumerlawtwincities.com was created to provide information on attorneys and resources dealing with consumer law in the twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Consumer law is a extensive area of law covering errors in one’s credit report, predatory lending, fair debt collection practices, consumer leases, automobile sales fraud, repossessions, unfair and deceptive practices, lending laws, and many other areas.

What are Consumer Protection Laws?

Consumer protection laws are designed to ensure fair trade competition and the free flow of truthful information in the marketplace. The laws are designed to prevent businesses that engage in fraud or specified unfair practices from gaining an advantage over competitors and may provide additional protection for the weak and those unable to take care of themselves. Consumer Protection laws are a form of government regulation which aim to protect the rights of consumers. For example, a government may require businesses to disclose detailed information about products—particularly in areas where safety or public health is an issue, such as food. Consumer protection is linked to the idea of “consumer rights” (that consumers have various rights as consumers), and to the formation of consumer organizations which help consumers make better choices in the marketplace.

What You Should Do If You are a Victim of Consumer Fraud

Consumer protection laws address a wide range of legal subjects.  If you or a family member has questions about consumer law or suspect that you have been victimized by a con artist and think you might need a lawyer, you should consult a qualified attorney or lawyer regarding your consumer law situation.  If you believe you have been victimized by a con artist, it is important to get advice from a lawyer as soon as you can.  Oftentimes, victims of fraud contact a lawyer when it is too late.  Once the statute of limitations has expired or evidence has been lost, the chances of winning a case diminishes substantially. If you believe that you are the victim of fraud, there is no reason not to consult an attorney immediately.  Many of the lawyers and attorneys listed on this website offer an initial consultation of your case for free.

Consumer Protection Laws Require the Wrongdoer to Pay Legal Fees

In most cases, wrongdoers must pay the plaintiff’s attorney’s fees in a consumer law matter.  When attorneys and lawyers help victims of fraud, in most cases they earn no fee unless the plaintiff is compensated for the losses the client has suffered as a result of the fraud. Many consumer protection laws allow clients to seek reasonable attorney’s fees from the wrongdoer.  Clients rarely pay their attorneys any fee directly out of their pocket. In the United Kingdom, this arrangement is known as No Win No Fee.

We had an air conditioner installed in July, 2012 which included 10 yr. parts and 5 yr. labor warranty. After 4 service calls, it has been determined that the coil is defective. The company that installed it is no longer in business, but was bought out by another company. Does the new company have to honor the warranty?
